Compliance and Audit Readiness for Construction Contractors
The records and habits that keep a federal construction contract clean under review.
Federal contracts come with oversight. Doing the work well is not enough if you cannot show it with clean records.
What reviewers look for
- Labor compliance — certified payrolls, correct classifications, and proof of payment on covered jobs.
- Cost documentation — invoices, purchase orders, and time records supporting what you billed.
- Subcontracting — flow-down clauses, small-business participation reports, and proof of payment.
- Quality and safety — inspections, test reports, and incident records.
Build the habit early
Set up file structures and naming conventions at the start of the project, not the week an audit letter arrives. Reconcile timekeeping to payroll, keep a change-order log, and store everything where it can be produced quickly.
When a review comes
Respond within the requested time, be accurate, and route questions through the contracting officer. If you find an error, correcting it early is far better than letting it surface later.
