PSC Codes: Matching Your Work to a Solicitation

Product and Service Codes classify what is being bought — and why they matter for finding and winning construction contracts.

Product and Service Codes (PSCs) classify what the government is buying. Where NAICS describes your industry, the PSC describes the specific deliverable. Construction work commonly falls under the Y and Z families.

Common construction PSC families

  • Y1 — construction of structures and facilities.
  • Z1 / Z2 — maintenance, repair, and alteration of real property.
  • C1 — architect and engineering services (construction-related).

Why they help you

Federal opportunities are often filtered by PSC. Tracking the codes that match your trade lets you set up saved searches and alerts that surface relevant solicitations instead of noise. When you respond, mirror the solicitation's language: if it is an alteration, talk about the Z-code work; if it is a new build, the Y-code.

Pairing with NAICS

A solicitation usually states both a NAICS code and a PSC. Use the NAICS code to confirm your size status and the PSC to confirm the scope is the kind of work you do and want. Building a short list of your top PSCs keeps your pipeline focused.
